International Wine Cellar | 94

($110; cabernet sauvignon with 8% petit verdot) Saturated ruby-red. Cassis, licorice, mocha and mint on the nose, with some suggestions of superripe fruit. Sweet and lush in the mouth but with lovely lift to the fleshy flavors of blackberry, cassis, violet, tar, spices and bitter chocolate. Finishes with substantial ripe, suave tannins and outstanding length.

The 2005 Metisse has soared in quality since I tasted it last year, putting on weight and showing much more drama and intensity than I thought. The final blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot has it all - a deep ruby/purple color and a beautiful nose of creme de cassis, vanilla, coffee bean, and spice box. The wine is full-bodied, has superb richness, silky tannins, and a very layered, rich mouthfeel. This is a sensational wine that can be drunk now or cellared for at least two decades or more.

Intense and concentrated, focused and complex, with dried currant, black cherry, cedar, sage and mineral flavors presented in a full-bodied style and framed by tight tannins. Better than previously reviewed.

Drink Dates: 2009-2025
Dark purple color. Full bodied. Bursting with dark fruit flavors, intermixed with cedar, and other earthy undertones. More of a Bordeaux in character than a Cali Cabernet. It did not go well with the food, but was still delicious on its own

About This Producer

Philippe and Cherie Melka, co-proprietors of Melka Wines, together share a passion and love for fine wines and a dedication to a simple, singular goal; to produce a high quality, limited production of fine wines. Philippe, born and trained in Bordeaux, is winemaking consultant to several of Napa Valley's premium wineries. Cherie, a long-time Californian, has pursued her career in the wine industry since 1988 as a trained enologist at some of California's greatest wineries.

The Metisse Proprietary Red Wine is made from a four acre vineyard located in St. Helena, California, next to Spottswoode winery, that was planted by David Abreu in 1999 to Bordeaux varieties. The soil profile, reminscent of Chateau Haut Brion, is very rich in gravels. The gravelly loamy texture allows the roots to penetrate deeply into the ground increasing the character and depth of the grapes.
