Reviews For This Wine

The 2005 Proprietary Red Wine is a blend of 96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, all from the Oak Knoll sector of Napa. Its deep ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by a sweet perfume of mocha, caramelized black cherries and currants, and hints of chocolate as well as espresso. With terrific fruit, medium to full body, supple tannin, and well-integrated acidity and alcohol, it should be drunk over the next 8-10 years.

Aromas of plum and roasted sage lead to intense, youthful black cherry, cracked pepper and licorice flavors, finishing with rich, loamy tannins. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Michael Polenske's vision is to create a consistently excellent wine by having the flexibility of building a wine out of his best lots. The backbone remains Merlot with a varying amount of Cabernet Sauvignon added when it benefits the wine.

Shows a nose of vibrant cassis, orange skins, dark cherry, blueberry, lavender, chocolate, licorice and slate aromas. The palate breaks in with hints of meaty olive shading seductive kirsch and black plum flavors. Bold and smooth on the finish. Continues to evolve over 80 hours.

Site Blog: The Wine Forum Violet color. It's somewhat balanced with a full body. Linear texture with a medium finish - Maybe in a weird place, this wine has shown better in the past. Spicy plum, violets, currants, mocha and licorice. Just seemed a bit off and out of balance.

Dense, jammy berry, spice and vanilla flavors on the nose. The wine itself fills the mouth with opulent flavors of red and black berry fruit, licorice, spice, pepper, strawberry and plum.

Floral aroma - violet or lavender. Medium body with currant and plum flavors followed by spice. A little heat at the end. I opened the bottle two hours before and it continued to evolve over the next three hours. 14.5% alcohol.

About This Producer

With the designation of Napa's fourteenth AVA in 2004, Oak Knoll District is now poised to bring forth the prominence and elegance of Merlot from this region. Perched to seize the day as Oak Knoll's foremost Merlot is Blackbird Vineyards, located in the heart of the district.

Since 1999, this former walnut orchard, first planted with 5717 vines two years earlier, has quietly provided fruit to many of Napa's finest winemakers, for whom it has yielded astonishing reviews and stellar scorings. Purchased by entrepreneur Michael Polenske in 2003, Blackbird Vineyards is now an ultra premium label in its own right.
