Good bright ruby. Superripe notes of musky mocha and maple syrup. Then tight and a bit medicinal in the middle palate, with good grip to the mint and herbal flavors. There's good breadth here, but I find this wine a bit clenched. For a wine with a firm acid edge, I expected more energy. Perhaps this just needs patience, but my enthusiasm was muted by some slightly dry tannins; the 2006 shows more consistent ripeness, not to mention better fruit. Incidentally, Aubert declassified the 2004, his first crop from these vines, as he found the wine too green.

The 2005 Proprietary Red Lucia Abreu Vineyard seems to have closed down since I tasted it last year even though it is still not in bottle. A blend of 47% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the wine has a dense ruby/purple color, wonderful purity, but jagged tannins and some austerity kept my score from going any higher. It exhibits more texture than last year, but I suspect I caught it on a bad day, and I will reevaluate it in 12 months.

Blackberry, stewed plum, currant, boysenberry. Long sharp edges on the palate that I do not believe will calm down. Teeth coating tannin. Coffee, chocolate, and raspberry on the palate. Long finish.
