($369-$500) Good red-ruby. Deep, sweet aromas and flavors of black raspberry, cassis, graphite and licorice. Wonderfully lush, silky and seamless, with a near-perfect balance of fruit and acidity. Very full in the middle palate but with terrific verve leavening the wine's total ripeness. This really coats the palate with flavor and the very long, slow-building finish features utterly sensual tannins. A great performance for this property.

Magnum. 45% Cabernet Franc, 55% Merlot. Very fresh on the nose – quite a contrast to the 2009! A brooding monster. Much more introvert than any of the younger vintages. Lots of density and masses of stuff going on in there… Fine tannins on the end. Needs SO long! Hint of some cough mixture here, hint of green apples, and just masses of tannin.

Purchased on release. Decanted, rebottled, and served 5 hours later. A slumbering bear better left to hibernate until 2015. Massive structure and frame undergirding a freight car loaded with chocolate cherry, smoky black currant, and tar. The alcohol is prominent in the nose, but the concentration and power is handled by a cooling reservoir of seemingly endless depth, as lava flowing into Lake Superior. Robed in midnight blue, this is long, this is tannic of high grade, and this is balanced. And to be clear..., not over-ripe or fat. Huge, dense flow -- that is the imagery. 96 may be an understatement.

Site Blog: Unidentified Appellation A recent vertical tasting of this Chateau demonstrated just how fabulous the peaks of Angelus? performance can be in vintages like 89, 90, 98 and 00. I remember leaving that tasting w/ an impression that they would never make a wine that could rival the 00 in terms of richness, depth and sheer decadence. The 2005 just pulverized my theory in as leveling a fashion as any! Angelus is a staggeringly mammoth wine in 2005 that nearly overwhelms the senses with its volcanic layers of fruit, tenacity of attack and sheer hedonism. This is a pure femme fatale of a wine that is the dry red wine?s answer to drinking Sauternes w/ a bucket of foie gras. Wines like this remind me that it perfection is possible when unbridled pleasure is harnessed into equilibrium

About This Producer

Chateau Angelus is located just west of the town of St. Emilion and was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classe status in 1996. Typical blends consist of Merlot and Cabernet Franc which are grown on Angelus's southerly-exposed vineyards. Chateau Angelus also produces a second wine called Carillon de l'Angelus.
