($75; 93% syrah and 7% grenache) Glass-staining purple. Exotic boysenberry, kirsch and candied violet aromas are positively intoxicating, expanding with air and picking up a wild, head shop-like character. Deep, chewy and sweet, offering palate-coating dark berry liqueur flavors and urgent mineral lift. It's remarkable for a wine to possess such weight and sweetness while maintaining focus-even elegance. Finishes with outstanding breadth and cling, leaving flowers and boysenberry in its wake. "This is the last one we'll release this year," owner/winemaker Justin Smith told me, also noting that he's not afraid to put syrah into a high percentage of new oak, depending on the vintage, since "it's a variety that can easily handle it."

While I wasn't able to taste the 2004, the 2005 James Berry Vineyard Bone Rock is a knockout. A blend of 93% Syrah and 7% Grenache that was aged in 500-liter French oak puncheons, it boasts a thrilling bouquet of cassis, lead pencil shavings, licorice and toasted spices. Seamless, pure and layered, with superb concentration and perfect balance, it has sweet tannin and an awesome finish. Give it a short decant if drinking anytime soon.

Dark, dense, rich and concentrated, with a tight, firm band of blackberry, wild berry, dark chocolate and smoky oak, revealing wonderful depth, concentration and complexity. Syrah and Grenache.

Always spectacular. However, had the Conterno first and it sort of dulled the significance of the Saxum. Very, very good, but about the same level, just different.

with this wine, I understood what minerality is and was immediately hooked. Very subdued at first but slowly blossom into something complex

Typical syrah fruit with more complex scents and flavors of smoke and leather. Tannins are mature imparting a long finish.

About This Producer

Saxum Vineyards is focused on producing Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre-based blends from the Templeton Gap of Paso Robles, California. They let their rocky calcareous soils, steep hillsides, and cooling ocean breezes speak through their wines by keeping yields extremely low, picking fruit at the peak of ripeness, and using a minimalist approach in the cellar. Production is kept at a total of 2200-2800 cases per year divided between 6 different cuvees: Broken Stones, Heart Stone Vineyard, James Berry Vineyard, Booker Vineyards, Rocket Block and Bone Rock.
