($216) Inky purple. Spicy dark berry and violet aromas build and expand with air, picking up suave mineral and sassafras character. Fleshy dark berry preserve flavors are complemented by zesty graphite and succulent herbs, finishing with superb depth and sweetness. Great material here, and I'll bet that this will please drinkers not long after its release, unlike most wines from this vintage.

CS Sweet like black cherry pastry laced with cinnamon and nutmeg. Fruit like deep crimson velvet and texture to match. Softness disguises a terrific weight and density of fruit. Sweet peppery finish. (JH)

Based on barrel samples, I had high hopes for the 2005 Hermitage La Chapelle, but it lacks a mid-palate and possesses hard tannins. However, there are some interesting creme de cassis, licorice, and earthy notes. But the wine's hardness and leanness may prove troublesome after another 5-6 years of bottle age.

Very juicy, with nice drive to the black currant and boysenberry fruit, which is pushed by dark plum sauce, black licorice and sweet toast notes. The long, fleshy finish shows the polished grip of the vintage. 400 cases imported.
