($90) Good red-ruby. Dark fruit aromas complicated by violet, bitter chocolate and minerals; more complex than the young 2006. Tightly wound but already sexy, with fresh acidity and underlying minerality giving the dark fruit flavors excellent definition. This seems distinctly sweeter than the 2006 owing to its early harmoniousness, but is actually lower in pH and higher in acidity, according to Jayson Pahlmeyer.

The 2005 Merlot is looking sensational, and far better than I thought last year. There are 3,000 cases of this wine, which is aged in 85% new Taransaud barrels. Blended with 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine reveals distinctive black cherry and berry notes intermixed with chocolate, mocha, caramel, and scorched earth. The wine is full-bodied, fleshy, but has underlying acidity and a long, layered finish. This wine can be drunk now or cellared for another 15+ years.

Deeply structured and brooding, with smoky black currant and mineral aromas and firm but layered blackberry, cedar and Asian spice flavors that finish with chewy tannins. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 3,265 cases made.

Waooo, profound, big, dark, full body Merlot....seems more like a Cabernet than a Merlot. Very distinctive and it's own league. This has steroids! What a fruit core, decant and enjoy with a healthy main dish. It will continue improve or getting more complexity over time. Stills very young like a 4 yrs old . It really impressive.

Dark blackberries and toast. Full bodied almost to the extent of a Cabernet. Very well integrated. But this wine is grossly overpriced.

About This Producer

Pahlmeyer started over 20 years ago when former trial attorney Jayson Pahlmeyer decided to turn his passion for wine into a career in Napa Valley. After studying viticulture and oenology at the University of Bordeaux, Pahlmeyer returned to the United States and produced his first wine (a Bordeaux blend) in 1986. Under the guidance of Pahlmyer, and current winemaker Erin Green, this reputation endures, annually establishing the estate as one of the finest producers of Bordeaux blends, Merlot, and Chardonnay in California.
