($79) Inky violet. Fresh blackberry and boysenberry scents are complemented by olive, dark chocolate and anise. Weighty and sweet but focused, with juicy acidity adding lift and supple tannins extending through the finish. Manages to avoid being porty or overblown but this has remarkably deep dark fruit.

Getting a big 'stunning' in the notes, the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin has the voluptuousness of the estate (and Grenache), yet stays gorgeously pure, lively and fresh. Blackberry, ground herbs, pepper, spring flowers and exotic spice all emerge from this beauty, and it has full-bodied richness, high, but sweet tannin, and a blockbuster finish. Drink it anytime over the coming decade or so.

This gushes with boysenberry reduction, linzer torte and loganberry flavors allied to a rich, creamy mouthfeel. But there's also plenty of grip, with underlying notes of mocha, mineral, sweet toast and incense that add volume and definition to the lengthy finish. 350 cases imported.

Large taste - full mouthfeel - long finish. Still strong tannins in the middle. Easily 3-4 more years before next bottle. Going to be gorgeous in a few more years.

About This Producer

Up until 1973, patriarch and proprietor Aime Sabon sold the entire production of this estate to cooperatives. In 1991, his son Christophe took over the running of the Domaine La Janasse, named after a family camp in Courthezon. The grapes that go into the "Cuvee Chaupin" come from a parcel of vines planted in 1912 and produce the pure, graceful, yet opulent and firmly structured wines for which the domaine has become renowned. Roughly a quarter of these wines are AOC Chateauneuf du Pape.
