($195) Good deep red. Musky raspberry, brown spices, game and smoke on the highly nuanced nose. Suave, dense and deep if a bit youthfully musclebound today; conveys a powerful impression of energy and mounts impressively with air. Finishes quite tight, even a bit youthfully dry-edged, with pepper and herbal notes. I suspect that this very dense young grand cru will need at least a decade in the cellar before its tough tannic spine begins to loosen up.

CS Closed on the nose at first, then wafts of spicy fruit like dry mulled wine, then peppery warmth. Powerful black fruit with a surprising lightness of touch across the mid palate and then a fine supple finish. Leaves the mouth feeling fresh and ready for the next sip. Great delicacy. Excellent. Gorgeous aromas of ripe, sappy cherry and wild berry fruit, with floral notes. Racy and firm, with intensity and a strong mineral element. It's bolstered by dense tannins, but has the fruit to match. Give this time to reveal its facets. 100 cases imported.

About This Producer

Domaine Faively began in 1825 as a classic negociant firm and has since been passed down from father to son for nearly 200 years. During this time, it has become the largest owner of classified vineyards in the Cote de Nuits, Cote de Beanue and Cotes Chalonnaise. With 10 hectares of Grand Crus and 25 hectares of Premier Crus, including several monopoles, Faiveley is not only one of the largest producers in Burgundy, but also one of the finest estates in the world.

Today led by Erwan Faiveley, the Nuits-Saint-Georges-based operation is looking to expand the domaine's holdings of exceptional vineyards to ensure more control from vine to bottle across the entire portfolio. Faiveley's top wines are hand-bottled with no filtration, resulting in wines described by Clive Coates as "...supremely clean and elegant: definitive examples of Pinot Noir... above all they have richness and breed, the thumbprint of a master winemaker."
