Jancis Robinson Author: Julia Harding MW

40% Grenache, 20% each of Syrah, Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon. Much sweeter on the nose than the 2004 - sweet fruit and oak. Perfumed and savoury at the same time and softer than the 2004 though it still has great depth. Firmness builds in the mouth but it still finishes fresh. Clear minerality but it is the fruit that sings at the moment.

The 2005 Clos Mogador is the first wine in Spain entitled to the new classification of "Vi de finca Qualificada". The estate is 20 hectares composing a single vineyard. The Garnacha wines are 80+ years of age while the other varieties (Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah) have been planted since the early 1980s. Average yields are under 10 hectoliters per hectare and only 2000 cases are produced. The winery has never purchased outside fruit. The wine is deep purple-colored with a superb bouquet of toasty oak, pencil lead, mineral, blackberry and black cherry. This leads to an opulent, dense, packed, structured wine with 6-8 years of aging potential. Super-concentrated, sweetly-fruited, and complex, this tour de force of a wine will drink well from 2012 to 2040.

Black cherry, kirsch, chocolate, black licorice and wild herb flavors are layered and lively in this supple red. Not a powerhouse, but balanced and focused.

nose was closed as this is very young to drink. With air exhibits earth, barnyard, dark fruit extract, spice, licorice. On palate it is muscular, complex, spicy, tightly wound due to young age, but with aeration well integrated spice, round full mouth of berries and strong tannins. Should not drink for at least another five years and then should evolve for another decade or two.

A big fruit forward style wine that is thick and tremendous in flavor. Tannins are well integrated, but it is the fruit and grenache flavors that really come through. Takes 2 hours to begin to develop in the glass. A long smooth finish follows each gulp.
