International Wine Cellar | 90?

Good saturated ruby-red. Sexy aromas of currant, minerals, brown spices and oak. Chewy, sappy and broad but quite dry; this combines an almost liqueur-like quality with a slight mid-palate hollowness (the '06 has more stuffing). Finishes with substantial, slightly dry tannins. I loved this wine from barrel in March of 2007, but the finished wine doesn't show the depth or verve of my earlier sample.

The 2005 continues to exhibit a European-styled finesse, elegance, and a certain austerity. The wine also shows considerable new oak, lots of acidity, which is almost atypical for this vineyard site, and a deep ruby/purple color with notes of cedar, bay leaf, cigar box, and copious quantities of black currant liqueur. It is a streamlined, classic, but slightly austere style for Bryant.

Elegant and stylish, with ripe, vivid black cherry, currant, wild berry and black olive flavors that gain depth and vibrancy, picking up body and complexity and ending with a long, lingering finish that keeps repeating the fruit and cedary oak themes.

About This Producer


Located high above Lake Hennessy, the vineyards which supply this outstanding expression of Napa's bounty are some of the few influenced by the moderating influence of a relatively large body of water. At 1,500-feet, the high altitude of the Pritchard Hill area also serves to produce low yields of premium grapes that provide the dense, concentrated, black fruit aspect of this enormously complex 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded in 1987 by Don and Barbara Bryant, the wines were originally made by Helen Turley. The current winemaker is Helen Keplinger with Michelle Edwards consulting.
