($80) Deep ruby. Impressively pure raspberry and blackberry aromas are given an exotic twist by fresh violet, anise and graphite. Chewy dark fruit flavors boast remarkable concentration and clarity, with sweet mocha adding interest. Finishes with bright, mineral-accented cherry and cassis flavors and superb persistence.

Finca Dofi is sourced from a single estate vineyard planted to 60% Garnacha with the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Carinena aged in 100% new French oak. Opaque purple, it offers a superb bouquet of slate, leather, pencil lead, wood smoke, and cedar. Youthful, tight, but perfectly balanced, this intense effort will evolve in the cellar for 8-10 years. All the ingredients for greatness are there but patience is required.

This expressive red delivers intensity with finesse. It's quite supple, yet the berry, garrigue, licorice and mineral flavors are focused and harmonious, and linger on the finish.

Decanted and drank over a two hour period. Peaked at around an hour and a half. Spectator nails it on this one. Great sweet fruit that definitely has layers but more medium bodied than full. The oak is well integrated and rounds out the wine but the tannins are difficult to detect, making me suspect of the long term viability of the wine. Solid effort and a nice wine nonetheless but I have had better Priorats for less money.

About This Producer

With Alvaro Palacios' background, it's no surprise he's leading the pack of new superstar Spanish winemakers. The industry is in his blood, as his family owns respected Palacios Remondo in Rioja. Family ties don't produce great wine, though, and Alvaro has done plenty on his own to bolster his qualifications. He studied enology in Bordeaux, then worked at Chateau Petrus under Jean-Pierre Moueix, honing his winemaking skills. Instead of taking his experiences back to his family's estate, he blazed a new path straight to Priorat's steep hills and terraces. In 1990 he bought his first vineyard, Finca Dofi, and soon after added to it what has become his most acclaimed source, L'Ermita. The vineyard, planted between 1900 and 1940, faces northeast and offers up Garnacha meriting mass critical acclaim. Alvaro's lofty vision has been to craft a wine somewhere between a Petrus and a Grange; a cursory glance at the reviews makes his accomplishment immediately clear. His three wines: Les Terraces, Finca Dofi, but most importantly L'Ermita, have launched him to absolute cult status.
