($45; 50% mourvedre, 27% syrah, 17% grenache and 6% counoise) Bright, deep ruby-red. Enticing aromas of black raspberry, plum, chocolate, flint and licorice. Juicy, chewy and packed with sappy flavors of red fruits, red licorice and minerals. Lovely framing acids. Dense, sweet and very long wine, finishing with firm tannic backbone.

None of the previous wines can compare with the 2004 Esprit de Beaucastel, a blend of 50% Mourvedre, 27% Syrah, 17% Grenache, and 6% Counoise. This is a beautifully complex effort (3,500 cases produced) displaying a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sumptuous perfume of earthy black cherries and cassis intermixed with new saddle leather, roasted meat, and Provencal herbs. With great intensity, medium to full body, and silky tannin, it tastes like a top-notch southern Rhone. This broadly-flavored red should age well for at least a decade.

A bit too light on the nose. Licorice with chewy texture. A bit to stiff on the finish to me. Flavor is a bit too simple.

Deep violet in color, this Central Coast blend of Mourvedre, Syrah, Grenache, and Counoise presents a lovely aromatics of cherry, currant, nutmeg, and flowers. Flavors of cherry, spice, and chewy tannin are most prominent on the palate, with a stony finish redolent of dark fruit. Although delicious now, it could also stand several years in bottle and should evolve nicely.

Full bodied spicy, earthy wine that got better after opening up. Opened an hour before dinner, and should of opened much earlier. Strong earth tones with a little spiciness, but balanced with fruits of dark sour cherries and currants. Having tasted some of the newer vintages, it was a little obvious that this was from a younger vineyard as the flavors were less refined than newer vintages.

A cepage that was heftier on Mourvedre (50%) and Syrah (27%) than the ?99, expressed one of the more distinctive profiles you?ll find in a Rhone Ranger. The aromatics were purely Provencal, with freshly picked rosemary, ground black pepper, hearty plum, hoisin sauce, and black berries leading the way to a suave, finesse-driven palate. This wine is wonderfully fashioned from head to toe and I find it?s melding of French sensibility and New World terroir to be riveting
