($75) Bright medium ruby. Cassis, blueberry, nutty oak and a whiff of camphor on the nose. Juicy, primary and intense, with superb cut to the dark berry and spice flavors. Very young, brisk wine with a serious tannic spine and impressive spicy persistence. This bottling has been getting steadily stronger in recent years.

The classic, opaque ruby/purple-tinged 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Peterson Family Vineyard exhibits a big nose of forest floor, smoke, licorice, cassis, and fudge. Dense, powerful, and moderately tannic, it may not be as flashy as many 2004s, but it is packed with fruit, glycerin, and power. Give it another year or so of bottle age, and drink it over the following 10-15.

Intense, fleshy, racy yet intriguing, with zesty wild berry, blackberry, anise and pleasant earth notes, joined by cedary oak. Not much finesse or subtlety, but this packs in lots of flavor. 490 cases made.

Potential, but still a lot of baby fat here. Rich and ripe with a nice acidic backbone, but nearly too rich. A few more years may mellow it a bit and bring out the character. Or maybe not

About This Producer

Switchback Ridge produces handcrafted estate wines sourced exclusively from the Peterson Family Vineyard in Calistoga. The property has been in the Peterson family since 1914 and encompasses nearly 100 acres located at the mouth of Dutch Henry Canyon. For over 75 years the property was primarily maintained as a farm and plum orchard, with vines intermingled amongst the trees. In 1990, the orchards were replanted to vineyard, where there are currently 18 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Sirah vines, in addition to a three acre 50+ year old Petite Sirah block that John Peterson helped plant as a child. The rich, rocky soils of this beautiful vineyard property consistently produce low yields of intensely flavored fruit, resulting in extremely concentrated, fruit driven wines that are the hallmark of Switchback Ridge. Bob Foley has been the winemaker since the first vintage in 1999.
