($45; 38% syrah, 36% grenache and 26% mourvedre) Deep ruby-red. Slightly high-toned aromas of cherry, truffle, cotton candy and smoked meat. Silky-sweet and seductive on entry, then sappy and spicy in the middle, with terrific acidity framing and lifting the blueberry and violet flavors. Wonderfully sweet wine, finishing with smooth tannins and lovely perfume. A superb example of the captivating blends being made in Paso Robles from Rhone Valley grapes.

The deep ruby/purple-hued 2004 James Berry Vineyard (500 cases) is a blend of 38% Syrah, 36% Grenache, and 26% Mourvedre. Sweet kirsch, licorice, cassis, and floral notes are found in this supple, round, tasty effort. Reminiscent of a 2003 Cotes de Nuits grand cru red Burgundy, it is complex as well as surprisingly forward. However, I suspect there is plenty in reserve. It will be interesting to follow this wine's evolution. I do not think it will be one of Proprietor Justin Smith's blockbusters, but it's a beauty.

My first James Berry. pop and pour. It listed as 16% alcohol. No spritz. Initial sip was already fantastic. great nose coupled with pure fruit and soft tannin bolstered by great acidity. One hour later, it was dominated by endless mineral driven after taste. At the end of it, we are afraid to open another different bottle, in fear of ruining the aftertaste. I am glad I am in the mailing list. RP gave it 91 and I said it is 96. For this kind of wine, I really don't care how low the score is. I will buy them for the mineral quality alone.

Very well integrated, balanced and great to drink. Who'd a thought this was from Paso Robles.

Another intensely fashioned, full-throttle New World blend that didn'tpull any punches, but seemed capable of landing them much more often than the Outpost was. Rich, toasty and delicious flavors sent tingles up the spine, sporting licorice, clove, blackberry liqueur, raspberry reduction and vanilla beans. The fruit was frank and sweet, gliding over firmly defined, sweet tannins in an opulent, but easy going fashion. Well done
