($50-$59) Good ruby-red. Currant, black raspberry, cocoa powder and graphite on the nose. Silky on entry, then impressively sweet in the middle palate, with classic Pauillac flavors of currant, chocolate and graphite dominating. This boasts the sharp focus of the vintage's best examples but can't quite match the 2006 for consistent ripeness and mid-palate depth. Tannins are quite firm and in need of six or seven years of patience.

Backward and powerful for the vintage, this blue/purple-colored 2004 exhibits classic creme de cassis, smoke, incense, and spring flower characteristics. Medium to full-bodied, dense, and excruciatingly tannic, this impressively endowed Pauillac is built for the long haul. However, patience will be required.

Shows beautiful aromas of crushed berries and currant, with hints of mineral. Full-bodied, with lovely currant, licorice and mint. Long and caressing. Very refined and balanced. Another winner from Pontet-Canet.

I was expecting more from Pontet Canet at this price (USD 60) in spite of the vintage. Still young thoug, it tastes like a light-weight Pauillac in my view. Try again next year.

From halfbottle. After opening up, which requires at least an hour of caraffe-time, this shows ripe plum and cherry fruits of the sweeter kind and definite wood notes. Not complex at this stage but very attractive nontheless. Palate brings good attack of cassis and cherry. Very fresh and not without elegance. Clearly young and primary with most aromas of fruit but not too young to enjoy. Lacking in length still. Very good aging potential. A lot happening in glass and caraffe.
