($89) Explosively floral aromas of raspberry and wild strawberry complicated by mineral and lavender notes. Concentrated and deep, with sweet but nicely focused red fruit and bitter cherry flavors accompanied by exotic smoked meat and black walnut tones. An impressively rich, powerful wine, offering serious palate coverage and a long, very sweet finish.

The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul, which spends 90% of its time in tank and 10% in old barrels, has turned out even better in bottle than it performed from cask. Basically 100% Grenache in 2004, this is clearly better than the 1999, which I own and drink frequently. It exhibits a deep ruby purple color and a wonderful sweet nose of black cherry, raspberry, licorice, spice box, and roasted herbs. Voluminous for a 2004, with full body, beautiful texture, a long, heady finish, and loads of fruit, glycerin, and decent acidity, this wine should drink beautifully for 12-15+ years. There was no 2004 Reserve des Deux Freres as all of that wine was put into the Mon Aieul.

Packed with pure, ripe fruit--raspberry, boysenberry and fig--along with cocoa, tar and violet notes. Long, rich, dark finish shows lots of exotic spice, date and dried fruit notes. Tight on the finish, so cellar for a while. 1,665 cases made.

Very evolved with prunes, licorice, cedar, humus, and smoke. Acidity keeps it fresh with good body and finish.

Ruby red color. Attractive perfumed nose of strawberry, cassis, licorice and flowers. Fruit flavors of blueberry and lingonberry are nicely sandwiched between the acid and tannins. On top of it all are some more complex notes of talc, cocoa, herbs and cedar wood. Very nice wine but a little angular and lacking in density and complexity to warrant a higher score.

A singular, fantastically pure rendition of 100 percent old vine Grenache that was the recipient of all the best fruit in ?04 as there was no Reserve des Deux Freres made during the vintage. Hypnotic aromas of sweet kirsch, fruitcake, demi-glazed mushrooms, hoison sauce and raspberry ganache penetrate the senses. The palate is wonderfully full bodied and loaded upfront with oodles of deep, sweet fruit and bone tingling acidity that makes the mouth water w/ each sip. Although it?s extremely pleasurable now, the wine is utterly primary and will undoubtedly benefit from at least a few more years in the cellar.
