($60; vinified with 75% whole clusters and 10% viognier) Good bright, deep ruby. High-pitched aromas of red berries, white pepper, brown spices and wild herbs, lifted by a note of rose petal. Juicy and penetrating; not a fleshy style but intensely flavored and light on its feet, with almost pinot-like floral lift to its berry, spice and pepper flavors. This wine, from a cold spot, is one of the lowest in alcohol of Pax's 2004 releases, at 14.6%. Finishes juicy and firmly tannic.

The 2004 Syrah Kobler Family Vineyard (90% Syrah and 10% Viognier) reveals a fragrant, northern Rhone-like perfume of rose petals and creme de cassis, tart acidity, and a big, rich, chewy finish. It could easily pass for a Cote Rotie in a blind tasting.
