International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 132

($52-$70) Deep, bright ruby-red. Sexy, ripe aromas of currant, black plum, raspberry, smoked meat, mocha, jasmine, black olive and earth. Smooth in texture but vinous and bright, with a penetrating character to the flavors of plum, currant, mocha and tobacco. Finishes bright and fresh, with dusty, tactile tannins and a classic St. Estephe medicinal note. This tightened up with aeration.

Still a Charmolue production at this stage, with a label very like that shown here. Light but true, classic, classy nose. Very well balanced and sophisticated. This is rolling with the vintage, not fighting it, and the end result is a pretty beautiful classic claret. Not for modernists though.

Wine Advocate Author: Robert Parker Issue: 171

An impressive effort for the vintage, the 2004 Montrose possesses a deep ruby/purple-tinged color as well as a sweet nose of black fruits intermixed with notions of smoke, cold steel, earth, and subtle background wood. With excellent texture, a sweet ripeness, medium to full body, and moderate tannin, it should drink well for 15+ years.

Dark-colored, with beautiful spice, blackberry and licorice aromas. Full-bodied, round and velvety, with wonderful balance and a long, long finish. This is a Montrose that caresses your palate.

Still young but already giving a lot of pleasure now. Classic and traditional as far as balance and roundness are concerned, not too woody, very fine wine.

Beautiful wine. Elegant, quality. Restrained fruits but yet ripe and giving. Cherries, berries, herbs, balanced tannins and acidity. Will reward patient drinkers... cellar for another 10 years before trying again (if you can wait that long)

Still massive tannins which just won't soften. However, this has a huge potential with good fruits, good level of acidity and multi-layer structure makes this a potential future stunner with maybe 4-5 additional years of cellaring.
