International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 132

($100-$140) Deep red-ruby. Bright aromas of dark fruits, licorice, rocks and leather, lifted by a light peppery nuance. Dense and broad, with a creamy, seamless mid-palate texture and a restrained sweetness. Finishes with fine, broad tannins and noteworthy persistence. With its very fresh style, this comes across as a bit more delineated today than the 2005 Haut-Brion. An excellent showing.

Mellifluous and round and fresh and lively. Dry finish and really revitalising.

Wine Advocate Author: Robert Parker Issue: 165

The deep ruby/purple color of the 2004 La Mission Haut-Brion is accompanied by meaty scents interwoven with hints of wet gravel, smoke, black raspberries, and cassis. This elegant, streamlined effort possesses crisp acidity and medium body. It should be approachable in 2-4 years, and last for 12-15.

Aromas of fruit and spices, with black pepper and cumin and undertones of forest floor. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit, a silky texture and a medium-to-long finish. 7,500 cases made.

Ruby and medium colour. Medium red fruit and berries, pretty elegant nose. Elegant palate with medium acidity. More on the fruity side. Nice balance and elegant. Medium long aftertaste

Remarkably elegant wine, wins you over w/ finesse every sip (ignore the fact that this is supposed to be the powerhouse of Graves, the proprietors utilized Mother Nature?s gifts to their best ability in 2004 and it is certainly representative in the glass). Dried porcini mushrooms, high class tobacco smoke, cocoa and blackberry fruit are remarkably long and pure in a seamless texture that evokes the ethereal qualities of an aged red Burgundy. Slightly edges out the Pape Clement in singularity, but not by much!
