Good red-ruby. Plum, mocha and chocolate on the nose. Lush and seamless on the palate, with a sappy, liqueur-like raspberry flavor complicated by leather and smoke. There's something Bordeaux-like about this broad but lively wine. Perhaps ultimately less suave than the young 2005 but today this is even longer.

I think the 2004 Matriarch is opulent and impressive. Dark ruby/purple, beautifully exotic and full-bodied, with notes of incense, toasty oak, blackberry, licorice, and chocolate espresso, the wine is round, fleshy, and succulent. Drink it over the next 12-15+ years.

Rich, almost thick and syrupy, with loamy, savory currant and black olive flavors that are compact and focused, all presented in a supple, graceful style. Finishes long and persistent.
