International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 131

($115; made of declassified Pommard, Volnay, Savigny-les-Beaune, Corton, Clos Vougeot and Clos de la Roche) Palish red. Sexy aromas of plum, redcurrant, smoked meat, mushroom and earth. Supple, sweet and shapely, with slightly dry-edged flavors of iron and tobacco. A very shapely wine with lovely persistence.

Consistent notes. There is a wonderfully unique component (animal/musk?), especially on the nose, that I have only found on Leroy & DRC red Burgundies. Deceptively light to medium ruby red color; significant sediment that requires the bottle to be standing up 48 hours before decanting; fresh fruit, esp. black, spice; haberdashery & musk on the nose that follow through on the palate; opened up even more an hour after decanting; concentrated & complex w/great balance & elegance - emphasis on finesse rather than power; soft integrated tannins; very long complex finish. A lovely Burgundy that is drinking well now and will do so for several more years.

Decanted upon opening. Some barnyard upon opening, but this blew off within 30 minutes. Very penetrating aromas of earth and flowers. I consistently find that the Leroy nose soars from the glass and, even on aromas alone, make these exceptional wines. As with other 2004 Leroys that I've tried, the color is light and starting to get a bit of an orange tinge; also not a brilliant color, but a bit cloudy. On the palate, a wine with some stuffing and lots of acid. A fairly rich "bourgogne" with a bit of earth, flowers and some red fruits.
