A wonderfully elegant, complex and pure red pinot fruit nose features notes of cherry, raspberry and hints of wood spice and earth that can also be found on the explosive, delicious, sappy and dusty flavors that also display touches of warmth and an acidic spike on the acceptably long finish. This is frankly a bit of an enigma at present as the wine is on the awkward side and not quite up to its usual high quality though given the excellent track record, I offer the benefit of the doubt that has been earned by performing well over the course of many vintages.

($90) Dark red-ruby.Sexy nose of black cherry, bitter chocolate and cured tobacco, lifted by a rose petal element.Rich, sweet and deep, with a sappy freshness to its dark cherry, raspberry and spice flavors. This fruit bomb finishes with lush tannins, subtle floral and spicy oak notes and lovely persistence. Even after 24 hours in the recorked bottle, the fat, creamy fruit remained fresh and seductive.

Rivaling the profound West Block, the 2004 Pinot Noir East Block boasts a slightly more saturated dense ruby/purple-tinged color, and plays it slightly closer to the vest. On the palate, it explodes with flavor intensity, depth, and length. Layered, rich, and full-bodied, this profound effort will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and keep for 10-12 years or longer. Kudos to Tom Rochioli, one of the truly great guys of the wine business.

Firm, intense and concentrated, almost dense. This is a rich, deep, muscular young Pinot that packs in loads of flavors, with glimpses of black cherry, wild berry and raspberry and hints of hazelnut and fresh earth. 200 cases made.
