International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 128

($74) Saturated ruby. Deep aromas of blackberry, violet, bacon fat, smoked meat and mocha. Then supersweet, chewy and lush, with explosive dark berry flavors complicated by game, charred oak, mocha and a saline nuance. Finishes with big, broad, dusty tannins and superb length. I actually thought this lacked a bit of verve on the nose, but there's plenty of acidity and grip on the back.

Wine Advocate Author: Robert Parker Issue: 166

A superb offering from the Reva Vineyard, the 2004 Syrah (12,000 bottles produced) boasts a blue/black/purple color in addition to gorgeous aromas of blackberry liqueur, creosote, graphite, and a hint of smoky oak. It is an intense, dense, stunning effort with huge tannin as well as a full-bodied, long finish.

Dark, intense and concentrated, with beefy, peppery wild berry and herbal scents joined by hints of tar and tobacco. Focused and deftly balanced. Tannic yet smooth-textured, ending with dashes of espresso and cedar. 2,000 cases made.

This is a beast! Need a couple of houses to breath. We opened without decanting and tasted throughout for 5-6 hours. This alien kept evolving and settled down after 2-3 hours. My friend mentioned cow blood and we could actually feel that when we first opened. Very weird feeling at first. But it evolved into a nice earthy fruity flavor unlike anything else. A very good wine.

more on the herbal flavor side instead of fruit side. long finish and elegant. Contradict to my prior expectation of big and brutal. very enjoyable

Interesting rich nose but extremely hot. The alcohol is impossible to hide despite good integrated fruit. Still fresh but out of balance in my opinion. This was my last bottle and I am not going to miss it.
