($110; blended with 4% cabernet franc) Full ruby-red color. Very ripe aromas of cassis, minerals, bitter chocolate, graphite, cedar and menthol. Sweet, lush and fruity; quite fat for a Spottswoode cabernet. A bit youthfully disjointed today but then this has not yet recovered from the bottling. Suppler than the '03-and not at all rustic or over the top. (On my most recent retasting of the '03, I found a bit more alcohol than the wine displayed last spring and rated the wine 90 points.)

This historic estate has been on a qualitative tear of late, and their 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon is, once again, the "Chateau Margaux of Napa Valley." Beautiful black currant and spring flower aromas jump from the glass of this dark opaque ruby/purple-colored beauty. With gorgeous texture, stunning purity, elegance and equilibrium, with nothing out of place, this is another tour de force from Spottswoode. Despite its current accessibility, it has 15-20 years of longevity ahead of it. It is a glorious wine!

Elegant and stylish, with pure, rich, vibrant and focused black cherry and blackberry fruit that's supple and polished. The aromas capture the ripe berry fruit, adding a pretty floral array, and the tannins are firm yet fine-grained. Long and persistent on the finish. One of the best from Spottswoode in recent memory. 1,532 cases made.

Not that great a wine, tannic and oaky with a full body nose. Paired it with roast beef and it was good, but not great.

About This Producer

Spottswoode is a family-owned historic vineyard and winery renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Established in 1882 by George Schonewald, the estate is distinguished by the historic Victorian home depicted on the Spottswoode label. Spottswoode was christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts, who owned the property from 1910 until its purchase in 1972 by Mary Weber Novak and her late husband, Dr. Jack Novak. The first Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon was produced in 1982, exactly one hundred years after the estate's founding.

The Novak family is committed to producing wines that faithfully reflect their grape origins. Each Spottswoode wine is known for its refined elegance, balance, and classic structure. Dedicated stewards of their property, the Novaks have farmed organically since 1985 and have pioneered the restoration of their local watershed.
