($95; from Clone 337) Good deep ruby-red. Currant, licorice, tar, coffee, mocha and spices on the nose. Fat, lush and sweet, stuffed with red fruit flavor and lifted by enticing inner-mouth aromatic character. Finishes with rich, suave tannins. This has turned out very well.

Wine Advocate | 99

The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon RBS, made from clone 337 and aged 20 months in a combination of Darnajou and Taransaud barrels, hit 14.5% natural alcohol. This wine shows the classic Pauillac nose of cedarwood, creme de cassis, licorice and fruitcake. It is fresh, full-bodied, ripe and long and is already starting to come into its late adolescence - meaning it can be drunk now or continue to be cellared for another 15-20 years.

Aromas of chocolate-covered cherry join currant, herb, cedar and spice in this sleek, polished youngster. Lush and smooth on the palate, it offers depth and concentration without weight. Shows a hint of heat on the finish. The tannins are ripe and integrated. 125 cases made.

About This Producer

Schrader's mission statement is essentially one where their 30-year leases on vineyard parcels give them the ability to present a specific clonal study of Cabernet Sauvignon from three highly desired clones (4, 6, and 337) grown within a single vineyard. The bottom line is that with their production averages about 1,600 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, the wines do have subtle differences, but most importantly, all of them are extraordinary in quality - among the finest Cabernets in California. Fred Schrader and his wife, Carol, hired Thomas Brown to make these wines.
