($50-$59) Good ruby-red. Currant, black raspberry, cocoa powder and graphite on the nose. Silky on entry, then impressively sweet in the middle palate, with classic Pauillac flavors of currant, chocolate and graphite dominating. This boasts the sharp focus of the vintage's best examples but can't quite match the 2006 for consistent ripeness and mid-palate depth. Tannins are quite firm and in need of six or seven years of patience.

Backward and powerful for the vintage, this blue/purple-colored 2004 exhibits classic creme de cassis, smoke, incense, and spring flower characteristics. Medium to full-bodied, dense, and excruciatingly tannic, this impressively endowed Pauillac is built for the long haul. However, patience will be required.

Shows beautiful aromas of crushed berries and currant, with hints of mineral. Full-bodied, with lovely currant, licorice and mint. Long and caressing. Very refined and balanced. Another winner from Pontet-Canet.

I was expecting more from Pontet Canet at this price (USD 60) in spite of the vintage. Still young thoug, it tastes like a light-weight Pauillac in my view. Try again next year.

About This Producer

One of eighteen Fifth Growth estates, Chateau Pontet-Canet is located in the northern end of the Pauillac appellation, and has one of the largest production volumes in the region. The vineyards date to the early 18th century, and are planted on extremely gravelly, well-draining soil, typical of the best vineyards in Bordeaux. Plantings are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Chateau Pontet-Canet wines are very concentrated, yet elegant, and have tremendous aging potential. The estate produces a second wine, Les Hauts de Pontet, as well as an additional red blend called Benjamin de Pontet.
