($55-$75) Deep ruby-red. Sexy, expressive nose melds currant, tobacco, coffee, mocha, leather and nutty oak. Rich, supple and sweet; a bit less dense than the 2006 but quite savory and enticing. This will evolve well in bottle but already offers considerable complexity. A great success for the year.

An undeniable star of the vintage, Pichon-Baron's 2004 boasts an inky/ruby/purple color to the rim as well as a big, sweet nose of melted licorice, chocolate, black currant jam, truffles, and charcoal embers. Soft tannin, full body, and abundant opulence and flesh are atypical for the vintage character, but this wine is loaded.

Lots of currant, licorice and light tar aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, yet refined and silky on the palate, with a lightly chewy finish. Needs time.

tasted a 96 Pichon at Alan's house on New Years Eve 2013 - it was lovely. Had just right nose for a frence wine but not overly forest floor, flavor was excellent, very nice.

A sweet cherry-cassis note makes this feel almost almost like a right bank wine. It is very attractive; some dryish alcohol shows, a whiff of citronella, and a lot of classy oak. With some time in the glass, the cherry note reminds me of a Brunello. Finishes with a cool floral note (violet) like the 2000 Les Tourelles (Pichon Baron's second wine).

About This Producer

Chateau Pichon Baron is a Second Growth classified Bordeaux estate located in the Pauillac appellation. In addition to producing a grand vin, Pichon Baron makes a second wine, Les Tourelles de Longueville.

The two estates Pichon Baron and Pichon Comtesse de Lalande were originally joined as one property in the 18th century, but its vineyards were divided among the Longueville heirs in 1850. In 1987 the French insurance company AXA purchased Pichon Baron and installed Jean-Michel Cazes as its director. More recently, Christian Seely took over the management role as of 2000. The property has seen much improvement over the last 20 years.

The 73 hectares of gravel vineyards are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The grapes are harvested by hand and the wine is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Aging is done in French oak barrels for up to 18 months. Pichon Baron has a structured style that can be attributed to the large percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend. Some of the best recent vintages include 2000, 2003 and 2005.
