($110) Full, deep ruby. Explosive aromas of red- and blackcurrant, tobacco, minerals and menthol. Sweet and fine-grained, with terrific fruit intensity and balance for a second wine-and a sense of completeness. Vinous, ripely tannic and long, but the tannins of the 2005 are more refined.

I was blown away by the 2004 The Maiden, which out of bottle is even better than it was from barrel. This wine exhibits a rather flamboyant scorched earth, lead pencil, incense, licorice, and blackberry and cassis-scented nose and flavors. The wine has superb concentration and is opulent, fleshy, and very much in keeping with the style of the vintage. Despite its accessibility, I suspect this wine will drink well for at least two decades.

Big, dark, rich, intense and firmly tannic, with a massive, layered core of spicy currant, mocha, black cherry and blackberry fruit that's deep and concentrated, unfolding with a remarkable measure of grace and finesse.

Opened and double-decanted 3 hours prior to drinking. Very dark red/black color. Nose was a bit unusual - some fruit, but also some vegetal and mint aromas. I found it enjoyable and intriguing, but most of the tasters were not fond of its character. A big wine with some black fruit flavors, but also quite a bit of oak, i.e. vanilla and peppery notes. I actually liked this wine more for its aromas rather than flavors. This wine may get a bit better over next few years, but I don't think by much. I much preferred the 2005 Maiden to this 2004.

About This Producer

Harlan Estate, owned by Bill Harlan, is located in the western hills of Oakville. Harlan is known for its commitment to creating a wine that is a California "First Growth," on par with those of the old world. The entire estate consists of 240 acres, including a homestead and plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Consulting oenologist Michel Rolland and winemaker Bob Levy lead the production of Harlan's wines, producing two Bordeaux-style blends: Harlan Estate's namesake proprietary red and "The Maiden." These wines have been received to great acclaim by reviewers and collectors alike, commanding high prices and a competitive waiting list. Both wines are complex, full-bodied and have the ability to age for decades. With an opulent style, rich with dense fruit and elements of black currant, spice, and minerals, Harlan is both graceful and elegant, ranking it among the top tier of California Cabernet producers.
