($99) Ruby-red. Powerful red and dark berry aromas verge on liqueur-like but are enlivened by zesty mineral and anise accents. Lush, supple and sweet, with deep raspberry and cherry flavors, fine-grained tannins and complicating herb and smoked meat tones. Very smooth on the finish, which is sappy, deep in cherry flavor and impressively long.

Very deep crimson and fantastic depth of flavour. Still a baby with very fine tannins and a lovely seam of refreshing acidity. Super-fine tannins but no shortage of very complex ripe fruit. Positively scuttles across the palate – so secretive is it at the moment, but the sample I tasted seemed bracingly clean and brisk yet with great depth. No suggestion of Beaucastel’s trademark animal flavours at this stage. Good stuff!

Showing brilliantly, with a deep, rich and layered profile, the straight 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape has gorgeous black cherry, earth, underbrush and background meatiness that gives way to a full-bodied, concentrated and pure feel on the palate. A foudre-aged blend of 30% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 5% Cinsault, with the balance a mix of the other permitted varieties, this knockout Chateauneuf du Pape will have another 10-15 years of prime drinking.

Thoroughly primal, with a torrent of raspberry and boysenberry fruit rushing forth. Only shows hints of its full range, with licorice, incense, graphite and mocha flavors fluttering in the background. Has an iron-clad structure, with a long finish that shows great cut and grip. 14,165 cases made.

About This Producer

Chateau Beaucastel, run by the Perrin brothers, is regarded as one of the best estates of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. At 131 hectares of vineyards, it is also one of the largest estates in the region. It is atypical of the appellation in its production techniques. It is one of three estates to produce and vinify all 13 grapes permitted under the regulations of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Also, unlike most estates, Beaucastel prefers to use as much Mourvedre in its blend as Grenache. As one of the first estates to practices organic viticulture, Chateau Beaucastel is often criticized for the influence of Brettanomyces, yeast that may contribute animalistic flavors to the wine. They are also controversial for their vinification practice of rapidly heating the incoming must in order to kill bacteria and extract color and flavor from the skins. After maturation in oak casks, the wine is bottled with light fining and no filtration. The house produces several cuvees, the grand vin known as Chateau Beaucastel. Their other wines include Hommage a Jean Perrin, Chateau Beaucastel Blanc, Roussanne Vieilles Vignes. Good values can be had by their Cotes du Rhone, Coudoulet de Beaucastel and their negociant line under the name Vieille Ferme.
