($70; 100% new oak; 15.9% alcohol) Pale green-tinged yellow. Spicy and tropical aromas of dried pineapple, minerals, flowers, cinnamon and nutmeg. Fat, ripe and compellingly sweet and seamless, but with rocky and saline traces giving cut to this viscous wine. Wonderfully chewy and juicy chardonnay, finishing with a powerful burst of flavor and superb length. A portion of this vineyard was harvested in August.

A superb effort, the 2004 Chardonnay Lauren Vineyard exhibits huge notes of lemon oil, nectarines, quince, citrus blossoms, and crushed rocks/minerals. This big, rich, full-bodied Chardonnay boasts stunning acidity, a superb texture, and an amazing finish. This Chardonnay tends to be aged in 100% new oak (which is totally concealed) and is bottled without fining or filtration. Consequently, if it has just been shipped or moved, it can reveal a slight haze.

A stunning wine, with amazing richness, depth, purity of flavor and concentration, with layers of ripe pear, creme brulee, date, apricot and hazelnut flavors that glide along on a silky smooth texture, with a finish that keeps revealing extra flavor nuances. 900 cases made.

Contender for the best Cali Chard that I have ever tasted. Granny smith apple, Bartlett pear, candied banana, stone fruit on the nose. Luscious and supple. The oak was so light that my friend asked if it was steal fermented. Light yet packed full of stuffing with a pinpoint, balanced finish that lasted for eternity. Focused, yet exuberant, the laser-beam of flavor quilted my tongue in warm unctuousness.

One of the most beautiful, balanced, subtle chardonnays I've had all year. Everything precisely as it should be. Complex without overwhelming power . . . like a seductive whisper. (I always thought the 2004 Aubert Ritchie was the best American chardonnay available, but the Lauren is showing much better than it did a year or two ago.)

About This Producer

Mark Aubert's four Sonoma Coast vineyard-designate Chardonnays - Lauren, Reuling, Quarry and Ritchie - have risen to cult status at a dizzying speed. Production is a limited 4,000 cases and the wines are available via the winery's mailing list. Aubert's career in winemaking reads like a fantasy, with his 1989 start as assistant winemaker at Peter Michael under the tutelage of Helen Turley, to his time at Colgin and Bryant Family. His eponymous wines are exemplary renditions of Chardonnay, replete with the rich bounty of the terroirs from which he sources the fruit. At the same time, they reflect his adept oenological hand, and maintain a focused balance of flavor and purity.

Aubert also makes several Pinot Noirs sourced from the Sonoma Coast as well as a "right-bank" Bordeaux style blend from Napa's Howell Mountain.
