($70) Good deep red-ruby. Liqueur-like aromas of raspberry, blackberry, dark cherry and cola, with a slight roasted nuance. Supersweet, supple and very ripe, with layered flavors of strawberry, raspberry, creme de cassis and candied licorice complicated by a note of chocolate liqueur. This very ripe and rich pinot reminded me of a 2003 Burgundy. Very long on the aftertaste, with lush tannins. This is 14.9% alcohol, vs. 14.7% for the Southing and Botella bottlings. An excellent set of pinots from this producer.

Site Blog: The Wine Forum Color: Perfectly Burgundy red, purple-red core, red edges Nose: Forest floor, camphor, black cherry, cinnamon spice. Palate: Full, yet supple black and red fruits: Blackberry, cherry liquor. On the bigger side, but not palate exhausting. Great wine!

If you like big fruity syrah, you will like this pinot. Not sure if there is anything in Bourgogne like this, but it's resemblance to Bourgogne or OR pinot is not noticeable.

About This Producer

For years, vintners have coveted a stretch of land in the western end of Santa Barbara's Santa Rita Hills AVA known to have the perfect microclimate, soils, and exposure to grow world-class Pinot Noir. In 1999, fulfilling a long-held dream of owner Bob Davids, this sought-after stretch of land became Sea Smoke Vineyard.

Sea Smoke produces Pinot Noir grown exclusively on the south-facing hillsides of their estate vineyards. On summer evenings, the Santa Ynez River canyon funnels a cool maritime fog layer (sea "smoke") across the hillsides, slowing the ripening process and providing the extended maturation period essential to the development of top-quality Pinot Noir.
