($65) Medium ruby-red. Blackberry and blueberry jam enlivened by flowers and exotic spices on the nose. Sweet, lush and generous; there's nothing hard about this pliant wine, which was made without any new oak. Finishes with broad tannins and lovely lingering fruit. This had been racked to tank the day before my visit but was showing very well.

The 2004 Syrah Cuvee Keltie (100% Syrah) displays classic licorice, asphalt, new saddle leather, blackberry liqueur, white chocolate, and pepper characteristics. This dense, full-bodied, superb Syrah possesses considerable structure and tannin. Give it 1-3 years of bottle age and consume it over the following 10-12.

Needs a LONG decant. Opened first night and too closed to drink. Night 3 was really good - roasted meats, hint of smoke, olives and a medium + finish. Good stuff.

About This Producer

Pax Mahle produced a wide selection of vineyard-designate Syrahs from Northern California under this label for many years before leaving to begin another project, Wind Gap. Under the Pax label, he utilized indigenous fermentations, minimal handling, unobtrusive use of French oak and bottling without filtering or fining. Great care was always taken in the vineyards to produce the best fruit possible by maintaining the vines on an individual basis and ensuring low yields. In addition to many Syrahs, Pax also produced several white wines including Roussanne, Viognier, and a white blend. In 2009, with the departure of Mahle, the brand was re-named Donelan Wines.
