($55-$58) Deep ruby-red. Black cherry, exotic oak spices and mint on the nose, with some suggestions of riper fruits. Sweet, intense and densely packed, with firm underlying structure and a cool-site character giving shape and energy to the flavors of dark cherry, cassis, truffle and violet. Very shapely wine. Finishes with chewy, ripe tannins and sneaky length.

Site Blog: Unidentified Appellation The hot streak for this chateau seems to have no end, and 2004 carries the torch to 2005 w/ grace. Raspberry pudding, high toned cherry and cotton candy scents seduce in the sweet perfume of this lovely Pavie Macquin. The focus from attack to finish on this wine is admirable, as pure ganache and cr?me de cassis float over a bed of sound structure. Cellaring will reward. Drink 2011-2028.

About This Producer


Pavie-Macquin is a bio-dynamically farmed estate with a wealth of old vines from which to source fruit. Consequently, the wines are manifestations of incredible intensity and concentration balanced by an abundance of fruit purity, mineral and a healthy grip. The Macquin name comes from Albert Macquin, who in his time was an authority on the grafting European vines onto American rootstock after the phylloxera tragedy of the late 1800s. The current decade has brought Pavie-Macquin a dramatic surge in quality due to the expert intervention of Nicolas Thienpont (Vieux Chateau Certan), Michel Rolland and Stephane Derenoncourt. In the 2006 reclassification of St Emilion, it was promoted to the level of Premier Grand Cru Classe.
