Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | 90

($42) Deep ruby. Intense cherry and blackcurrant on the nose, with vibrant minerality adding lift. Licorice and sweet chewing tobacco flavors complement chewy dark berries and kirsch, with slow-building tannins adding support without detracting from the fruit. Gained ripeness and depth with air while maintaining energy.

The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits an opaque ruby/purple hue followed by pure, unevolved, black currant, raspberry, crushed rock, and spring flower-like notes. Very primary, it tastes more like a barrel sample than a finished wine, but it possesses enormous potential because of its combination of elegance, structure, and intensity. It should be forgotten for 7-8 years, and drunk over the following three decades.

About This Producer

Mount Eden Vineyards is a small historic wine estate located on a 2000-foot peak in the Santa Cruz Mountain Appellation about 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Founded in 1945, it focuses on small lots of estate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Planted in austere, infertile Franciscan shale on a cool, exposed mountaintop, the low-yielding estate vineyards have produced world class wines for over a half century.

Since 1981 Jeffrey Patterson has guided the winemaking and grape growing at Mount Eden. His emphasis is on wine growing rather than winemaking, and an obsession with gentleness and naturalness in the handling of the grapes and wines is his ongoing passion.
