Reviews For This Wine

Good red-ruby. Plum, mocha and chocolate on the nose. Lush and seamless on the palate, with a sappy, liqueur-like raspberry flavor complicated by leather and smoke. There's something Bordeaux-like about this broad but lively wine. Perhaps ultimately less suave than the young 2005 but today this is even longer.

The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Matriarch, which I had rated 93 in 2008, was fashioned from the lots culled out from the single-vineyard wines. This is the most open-knit and evolved of all these 2004s. Full-bodied with fabulously concentrated chocolaty, espresso, black currant and blackberry fruit notes, it is fragrant, silky smooth, broad, supple and altogether captivating. This is a beauty to drink over the next 10-15 years.

Rich, almost thick and syrupy, with loamy, savory currant and black olive flavors that are compact and focused, all presented in a supple, graceful style. Finishes long and persistent.

Site Blog: The Wine Forum Color: Nice claret red edges, dark core Nose & Palate: Notes of cedar, black cherry, black currants, blackberry, dusty sweet mocha, with hints of pencil shavings and savory roasted meats. Rather reserved and in much better balance than the 2003, the 2004 is a cornucopia of sweet black fruits like cherry, blackberry and currant, some spicy oak and mocha chocolate, concentrated without being weighty, the tannins are superb with good grip, no edge to them at all.

About This Producer

In his ongoing quest to produce world class wine in the tradition of 1st Growth Bordeaux, Bill Harlan - of Harlan Estate fame - started Bond to create single vineyard wines from sources meeting his high growing standards. Winemaker Robert Levy produces five vineyard designate wines: Melbury, St. Eden, Vecina, Pluribus and Quella, as well as a blend called The Matriarch. Levy's goal is for each wine to take on the unique expression of its vineyard site and Bill Harlan's ultimate plan is to produce wines from a total of 6 unique vineyards. The wines are known for their lush, deeply concentrated flavors, and their elegance and finesse, which Bill and Robert feel define them as the "Grand Crus" of Napa. Fewer than 1,500 cases of the Matriarch, and between 400 and 700 cases of the vineyard designates are produced annually.
