($75) Deep purple. Powerful, sexy aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, fruitcake, cigar box, graphite and violet, with suave oak spice adding even more interest. Sweet, silky and deep, with wonderfully pure dark berry flavors complemented by cinnamon, smoked bacon and red licorice. Utterly delicious if very young, with great vibrancy, clarity and even elegance. This compellingly sweet and very long wine is the best bottling of Clos Mogador I've had to date.

70% Carignan, 20% Grenache, plus Cabernet and Syrah. 14.5% Very dark and savoury. Remarkably fresh and juicy given the concentration and firm tannins – tannins give a freshness on the finish and a lovely cool length. (JH)

Clos Mogador is produced by the esteemed Rene Barbier who has hit homeruns in both 2003 and 2004. The 2004 Clos Mogador has a more saturated purple color than the 2003 as well as a more expressive perfume of mocha, coffee, and flowers (violets) in addition to toasty oak, earth, and blue and black fruits. More extracted and backward than the 2003, it demands a decade of cellaring and should drink well for an additional 20 years. The 2004 is a tour de force. -Jay Miller

A favorite among my Spanish wines. Deep, dark purple color. A thick choclatey, tarry wine, but the fruit is still present. The wine is balanced with sufficient tannins and adequate acidity. I wonder what this will be like in ten years,,,,

About This Producer

Rene Barbier of Clos Mogador has earned a place at the top of this region's producer list. He extracts juice of great structure and power from his fruit, all with the help of an olive press, which ensures even higher concentration from the already highly concentrated Priorat varietals. Minimal yields of 80-year old Carinena, as well as younger Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha, and Syrah are are hand-harvested from the schist soils in the village of Gratallops. Clos Mogador produces limited quantities of three wines: Clos Mogador (35% Garnacha, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah, and 10% Carinena); Clos Manyetes (70% Carinena, 20% Garnacha, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Syrah); and Clos Nelin Joven (50% Garnacha Blanca, 30% Viognier, and 20% Pinot Noir).
