Reviews For This Wine

A nose of dark cherry, chocolate, brilliantly concentrated followed by clove, graphite and spice with hints of jasmine and creme brulee. The palate shows black cherry and dense licorice-laced black berry fruits. After 5 hours of air the palate develops more mouth-filling softness, with some elegant tannins.

Tasted at Ma(i)sonry alongside the current flight of Blackbird offerings - note that bottle had been opened the previous day and had a good bit of exposure, which I would absolutely recommend for this wine. Fabulous nose - literally spills out of the glass with (pleasant) floral notes and vanilla. Mouthfeel is sophisticated, with a palate of cocoa, caramel and burnt coffee. Structure was very impressive, with softened tannins and a very surprising finish.

Slate, raspberry, and earth on the nose. Supple tannins and good structure but still a bit tight. Hold this. Came back to this 4 days later and it was even better. The tannins and fruit had settled down, WOW. (Revised score from 92 to 94)

About This Producer

With the designation of Napa's fourteenth AVA in 2004, Oak Knoll District is now poised to bring forth the prominence and elegance of Merlot from this region. Perched to seize the day as Oak Knoll's foremost Merlot is Blackbird Vineyards, located in the heart of the district.

Since 1999, this former walnut orchard, first planted with 5717 vines two years earlier, has quietly provided fruit to many of Napa's finest winemakers, for whom it has yielded astonishing reviews and stellar scorings. Purchased by entrepreneur Michael Polenske in 2003, Blackbird Vineyards is now an ultra premium label in its own right.
