($27) Ruby-red. Bright, perfumed nose offers sexy raspberry, strawberry and cherry liqueur aromas accented by subtle notes of fresh rose and exotic spices. Lively and brisk, the with tangy acidity providing focus and cut to the pure red fruit flavors. Really delicious wine, with expansive, sweet raspberry and cherry flavors on the zesty, long finish. This can be enjoyed already, but I'd hold it for at least three years.

It took about 1/2 hour in a decanter before it really started to open up. The nose on it amazingly resembled a Bordeaux (similar to the cedar present in a St Julien - very impressive). The color was inky purple right to the edge of the glass. The wine possesses flavors blackberry jam and black cherry with notes of vanilla from the new oak. The fruit is in balance with the substantial tannins present. However, this wine is very young now and should easily improve over the next five years and will most likely hit its stride in the next 2 or 3 years.

About This Producer

Of this esteemed winery, importer Eric Solomon writes: "Artadi is about purity of extracted fruit with almost Burgundian textures. In fact, critics have often compared these wines to the top wines of Chambolle-Musigny and other top appellations of Burgundy. They are some of the most extraordinary examples of Tempranillo in the world."

Winemaker Juan Carlos Lopez de la Calle turned this former small cooperative into a Tempranillo powerhouse on the solid foundation of his elegant wines. Since the mid-1990s, when de la Calle took control of the property, it has grown to include 75 ha of vineyards in the high altitude, chalky soils of Rioja. French oak complements the mineral-laden fruit in the top cuvees. See all Spain producers
