Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | 92

($46-$60) Bright, full yellow. Honey, pineapple and a whiff of menthol on the nose. Then impressively powerful in the mouth but with lovely acidity leavening its concentrated fruit. Very juicy and fine for Suduiraut, and not at all outsized or overly sweet. Comes across as very young, and finishes with noteworthy spine. Quite suave.

Rich and peach-like. Firmly cosseted, but lots of exciting, concentrated ripeness. Masses of acidity, too. Should age very well.

Intense aromas of pecan pie, dried apricot, apples and syrup. Full-bodied, medium-sweet, with a dense mouthfeel of very ripe fruit and a long, powerful and spicy aftertaste. Very, very impressive. Not quite the 2001, but who's arguing? 6,500 cases made.

Good but lack some acidity. Brightened up with air time-will slow O the next bottle for an hour or so.

Like drinking mild liquified grapefruit rind with honey. Great stuff! Wonderful persistent mouth taste - 30 seconds easily. Nice balance of sweetness and alcohol.

Amazingly rich, ripe, and full, with great botrytis and balancing acidity. The style reminds me of Rieussec.

About This Producer

The Suduiraut family has occupied this Premier Cru estate since the 16th century. The vineyards border those of Chateau d'Yquem where just a single wing of the original chateau remains. Suduiraut began seeing success in the late 19th century when it received accolades for its innovative means of grafting French vines to American rootstock to counteract the damaging affects of Phylloxera. This pioneering solution paved the way for Suduiraut to produce wines of superior quality decades later. In 1940, Suduiraut was revitalized under the management of Pierre Pascaud. Today, the vines at the chateau consist of approximately 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. Most of the wines show best after about 10 years of bottle aging. In addition to a Creme de Tete and Creme de Tete Cuvee Madame, the estate's second wine is Castelnau de Suduiraut.
