Though I was not a fan of the 2002, I was enraptured by the 2003 Merlot. Chocolate, cassis liqueur, cherries jubilee, spices, and violets are found in its magnificent aromatics. Aged in 80% new oak (of which 80% is French and the balance Pennsylvanian), this concentrated gem slathers the palate with black raspberries, spices, copious quantities of cherries, and blackberries that envelope its significant tannin

Tangy stuff, with a lifted note in the aromas and a gamy edge to the juicy wild berry and earthy spice flavors, framed with spicy oak on the jazzy finish. Distinctive, but it won't please a crowd. 2,576 cases made.

Blackberry, cassis and a hint of raspberry. The distinction of french oak and American is notable on the finish. Balance is impeccable, this is more of a French Merlot than CA.

About This Producer

Gary Figgins, owner-winemaker of this oldest winery in the Walla Walla Valley, turned his winemaking hobby into a career in 1977 after years of amateur experimentation in is cellar. He is respected for being entirely self-educated in winemaking and having an obsessive attention to detail, going so far as to choose specific logs for his barrel staves years in advance. Despite his overwhelming success, total production of his Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, blends, and Riesling remains limited.
