($85; a blend of three vineyards, with 75% of the wine from Coombsville) Bright ruby. Cassis, blackberry, licorice and violet on the nose, complicated by coffee and chocolate; slightly port-like. Then dense and compellingly sweet, with an enticing sugar/acid balance and firm tannic backbone. A very fruity wine with considerable early appeal; has a family resemblance to the Mark Herold's own Merus bottling. This is just under 15% alcohol.

A strong effort, the opaque purple-colored 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon offers up beautiful aromas of melted licorice, sweet new saddle leather, roasted herbs, creme de cassis, and spice box. Elegant yet authoritatively flavored with superb fruit, beautiful balance, and supple tannin, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon cuvee can be enjoyed over the next 12-15 years.

Ripe, rich and vivid, with intense blueberry and wild berry flavors that are tight and focused, revealing a dense, loamy core of currant fruit that provides a supple baseline of flavor and texture. Not shy with its tannins, which are ripe and integrated.
