International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 126

Bright, deep ruby-red. Aromas of black cherry, redcurrant, menthol and red licorice. Sweet, dense and fine-grained, with lovely floral lift. Nicely ripe for the year. Finishes with firm, lush, building tannins. This needs a couple more years in the bottle. (The 2004 was being blended on the day of my tasting.)

Made in the Harlan Estate style, but more supple and evolved, the 2003 The Maiden exhibits plenty of caramel, black currant, and espresso roast characteristics, a fleshy mid-palate, and a long, supple finish. Consume it over the next 10-15 years. Not yet released.

A good wine but not the 2002. I like the Maiden, sometimes more than the regular Harlan.
