This is a 320- to 500-case cuvee made by talented viticulturist Lisa Behrens, of Behrens and Hitchcock, and Francoise Peschon, the longtime winemaker at Araujo Estate. The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon possesses a similar profile, with slightly less seamlessness compared to the more showy 2002, more structure, and beautifully sweet black currant fruit interspersed with hints of flowers, spice box, forest floor, and bay leaves. This rich, impeccably balanced Cabernet can be drunk young, or cellared for 12-15 years.

As always, the wine is beautifully concentrated. The ripe black cherry, blueberry, and cassis aromas in the nose are accompanied by hints of aromatic bark, espresso, and dark chocolate. Over a period of 45 to 60 minutes the nose continues to blossom. On the palate, the velvet-like texture is backed by excellent structure. Previous vintages have been supple and lush on the palate; here I find a dimension of elegance. The flavors are of crushed cranberry, black cherry, and cassis. The finish is smooth and focused, with hints of violet and chocolate, and some well focused acidity.
