Good deep ruby-red. Aromas of blackcurrant, licorice, mocha and menthol offer great lift. Then superripe and densely packed, with great sweetness and inner-mouth aromatic character. The flavors of black cherry and leather are given definition by a strong element of liquid stone. Finishes extremely long, with lush, suave tannins.

Initially rated 96, the 2003 Cariad is composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. It does not have the intensity or exuberance of the 2002 or 2001, but it offers abundant notes of crushed rock and minerality intermixed with hints of smoky barbecue, camphor, asphalt, blackberries and blueberries. A more earthy/mineral-dominated wine with good acidity and a long finish, it has reached full maturity where it should remain for another 15-20 years.

Rich and complete, yet shows the telltale signs of the vintage with its austerity. Dense, with earthy currant, black cherry and wild berry fruit that's tight and compact. Finishes with tight tannins and persistent flavors that return to the currant and earth themes. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. 500 cases made.

After reading some tasting notes on this one I decanted the wine for 8 hours. Almost black in color and with the time in the decanter a nose of blackberries, meats, licorice, and spices developed. A massive wine on the palate with an incredible finish.
