($60) Medium red. Spicy aromas of cherry, raspberry, rose petal, herbs and baking spices, with a suggestion of stems that adds to the wine's complexity. Sweet and silky, with firm acids giving shape to the cherry and spicy flavors. Juicy, firmly tannic wine, finishing with a slight dry edge and good grip. Nuanced and intriguing pinot. The crop level here was about three tons from two acres.

Although it was my least favorite of the Brewer-Clifton Pinots, the dark ruby-tinged 2003 Pinot Noir Cargasacchi Vineyard is an excellent, possibly outstanding effort. Tight, structured, tannic, and austere, with coaxing, aromas of dried herbs, boiled meats, red cherries, and flowers emerge. Give this tightly-knit Pinot 1-2 years of cellaring and drink it over the following decade.
