(a Bordeaux blend based on 73% cabernet sauvignon; 14.6% alcohol) Deep ruby-red. Aromas of currant, dark chocolate, creosote, lead pencil and violet. Fat and sweet in the mouth, with ripe flavors of raspberry, currant, mint and chocolate. The tannins here are finer than those of Everything But... and there's also stronger buffering fruit.

A combination of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Merlot and Petit Verdot, the 2003 The Contender reveals soft, silky tannin, earthy blackberry and currant, smoke, and mineral aromas, and a surprisingly elegant format. Ripe, medium-bodied, and stylish, it is more of a lightweight than a heavyweight.
