A deeply pitched yet wonderfully elegant nose of black pinot fruit, game even slightly animale and subtle underbrush notes complement perfectly balanced, pure and powerful flavors that pack plenty of punch and superb length. This is a big if not massive wine with a dusty, lingering finish of real style and grace. At the moment, this is actually more refined than the Bèze, which is usually not the case at this early stage. This should age well for years and it will require at least a decade to really begin strutting its stuff.

($181) Medium red. Aromas of raspberry, minerals and smoked meat, with a positive earthy nuance. Dense and sweet, with a wonderfully silky, thick texture and solid mineral underpinning. This is thicker and broader than the Clos Saint-Jacques but more backward. Mounts slowly toward the back and builds impressively, finishing with a hint of medicinal austerity. This is quite fresh for the year, and the tannins are fine.

Mid crimson with more lively colour than the 2003. Quite heady and compost-like. Rich and round and velvety without being at all over the top. Smooth and sumptuous. Long and round. Really vibrant. I think this will be one of the exceptional 2003s which go on and on and on.

Red cherries, super-ripe raspberries, fresh blackberries and spices make up the aromatic profile of the 2003 Chambertin. Medium to full-bodied and silky-textured in both the attack and mid-palate, this wine exhibits outstanding amplitude and depth. Assorted sweet black fruits are interspersed with a myriad of spices in its complex character. Its extensive finish displays copious quantities of firm, slightly rough tannin.

A supple red, this exudes cinnamon, plum and cocoa aromas augmented by flavors of licorice and mineral, with a long, lively finish. Balanced, yet needs time to integrate the dense tannins. Will be terrific in about 10 years. 64 cases imported.
