Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | 91(+?)?

($245) Bright, saturated ruby. Complex, superripe nose hints at chocolate, smoke, dried herbs, soy sauce and leather, along with a dried fruit character suggesting some surmaturite Rich, broad and fine-grained, but much less sweet than the 2002. A firm spine of acidity gives this structured wine a slightly spiky quality today. Finishes with granular, tongue-dusting tannins that are less pliant than those of the 2002.

The 20003 was made by Martha McClellan and the viticulture looked over by David Abreu. The 2003 Sloan, if slightly less prodigious than the perfect 2002, remains a young wine. Notes of vanillin, espresso roast, blackberries, scorched earth, camphor and hints of charcoal and barbecue meat jump from the glass of this spicy, rich, provocative Cabernet Sauvignon. With a full-bodied mouthfeel, sweet tannin and adequate acidity, the blend includes 14% Cabernet Franc and 86% Cabernet Sauvignon from this extraordinary hillside vineyard above Auberge de Soleil in mid-Napa Valley. This wine is 2-5 years away from full maturity, and should last for another decade.

Dark, plush, intense and concentrated, with a deep core of ripe currant, blackberry, wild berry and cassis. The well-integrated oak has a roasted coffee flavor, and though this is quite tannic, the tannins are ripe. Ends with a long, persistent finish.

Come on 80, really? You may not be a fan but that is absurd. This wine has good fruit, a bit smokey with dark earthy flavor. Very textured with good finish.

About This Producer

Location alone is enough to draw attention to this wine - the vineyards are perched upon a picturesque hill above the renowned Auberge du Soleil - but the added value of having David Abreu plant the vineyards and Mark Aubert as the founding winemaker ties it all together into a package destined for stardom. The inaugural vintage, 2000, came out in 2004, with huge concentration, brilliant fruit integrity and a rich, complex character. The incredible structure of the Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend comes from the balanced integration of the exquisite 100% Rutherford estate fruit and the obsessive attention to detail in the vineyard and cellar. Martha McClellan is current winemaker, under whose guidance Sloan continues in the young tradition that earned it a 100-point score from Robert Parker for the 2002 vintage.
