($120; 85% cabernet sauvignon, 8% merlot and 7% petit verdot) Full ruby-red. Knockout nose offers blackberry, currant, plum, cedar, minerals and dark chocolate. Fresh, succulent and quite firm in the mouth, with brisk acids and a minty nuance lifting the dark berry and chocolate flavors. Finishes with chewy tannins that come across as a bit less harmonious than those of the young 2004. But this youthfully closed wine grew sweeter with aeration.

Very hot end to the season resulting in some 15% Merlot with residual sugar – a year remarkably similar in some ways to Europe’s 2003 vintage.Bright crimson. Complex, spicy nose. Sweet, rich and velvety – not that unlike 2003 bordeaux – but the very obvious tannins have been well managed and are not quite as aggressive as they tend to be in Europe. Great lift. Quite polished. Not the alcoholic strength.

One of the smallest crops to be included in the Ridge Monte Bello, only 32% of the production made it into the 2003, which is largely Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot. Out of barrel as well as post-bottling I liked this wine a lot, and it has changed very little from when I last tasted it in February, 2010. It boasts an inky/blue/purple color along with sweet black currant, blueberry, graphite, licorice and toasty vanillin aromas. The tannins are still noticeable in this full-bodied 2003, but seem reasonably well-integrated. Forget this wine for another decade and drink it over the following 30+ years.

About This Producer

Ridge Vineyards, known for its stellar reds, began when San Francisco doctor Osea Perrone bought 180 acres of land near the top of Monte Bello Ridge in California's Santa Cruz Mountains. The cellar, and present-day production site, was built into the mountainside on three levels. After success with several Cabernet Sauvignon vintages in the 1940s, the Perrone family decided to buy the terraces back and began producing high quality Zinfandels and Cabernet. By the '60s, Ridge was a 45-acre vineyard and produced its first Geyserville Zinfandel. Today, Ridge also has vineyards in Sonoma and Paso Robles. While Cabernet and Zinfandel make up most of Ridge's production, small amounts of Carignane, Syrah, Grenache, and Petite Syrah are also grown.
